THE LEGEND OF QUEEN HYNDE

by R G Black

THE LEGEND OF QUEEN HYNDE tells the story of the first Queen of the Scots in the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada, in Beregonium (now Benderloch) on the west coast of Scotland. It is an exciting tale set around the year 573 AD and was first told by James Hogg in his epic poem "Queen Hynde".

This book has transformed the work into a vibrant historic novel with several changes to bring the story more into line with what is known of this period.

On the death of her father King Conal, young Hynde is given charge of the Kingdom and sets about finding a King to stand by her side. Unable to find the ideal mate she decides to set sail for the island of Iona to bury her father and take the oath on the famous stone. She falls foul of the pious monks of Iona who are the keepers of the Stone of Destiny and returns to Beregonium uncrowned. Within days the city is invaded by hordes of Vikings and their leader Eric proclaims his right to rule the little Kingdom and take Hynde as his Queen.

With the help of St Columba (Columcille), her brave clansmen, her impish handmaiden Wene and a mystical giant warrior, Hynde succeeds in outwitting Eric but not without great loss of life among her people.
